Our televised world and global travel have opened up design and style desires as never before. Think Mediterranean / Spanish / Moroccan. Dark wood, dark leather, whitewashed brick and sun baked stucco. This property already has the architectural beginnings of the desired style, clay tile roof, high beamed ceiling, and massive arched brick fireplace.

As a second home, this client wanted to continue the old world feel, with a request for “dark wood, dark leather, but at the same time I don’t want the ambiance to be too “heavy”, and I’m definitely not into a lot of frilly pillows…”

I began with the sofa, sumptuous, rich dark brown grain leather, overstuffed, with rolled arms and camel back on a simply carved dark wood frame. I placed the sofa perpendicular to the fireplace as a primary focal point.

I complimented the sofa with two classic armchairs that are a deep low slung style, in soft velvet like jacquard. The rich brown fabric with hints of spicy colors, chili pepper, paprika, sage, and curry add a dash of color. The round table in between mimics the shape of the fireplace arch, creating the perfect conversation, reading, or play space. I some how envision two men in turbans sitting there playing chess. Maybe it’s the camel?

The designer coffee table with its nail head copper inlay top, hand scraped wood and curved X stretchers, centers the seating group and brings the room together. The leatherette faux book on the table holds the remote controls for the entertainment equipment on the opposite wall.

As a secondary focal point, a modern version of a library, this well designed media center does it all without comprising the design. Medium-dark tone distressed wood, with leather door inserts, and dentil trim molding is in keeping with our old world style. It functions as space for the flat panel TV, DVD player, and stereo. Bookshelves, storage doors and lighted glass display for their travel collectibles.

We’re not done yet; to add life to the room I’ve placed a wild palm tree in the corner with an uplight to create shadow and ambiance. A sofa table under the window holds a lamp for task lighting and accessories just for fun.

So what does the client think about his new worldly Palm Springs “Dar” (the Moroccan word for home)? “Stunning, Tammy, we love it! Thank you”. You are welcome, home.
